My Spreads

Nothing will compare to the journey of designing my first spread with nothing to go off of. My design evolved each day, and was challenging since I chose fonts and style along the way. Designing my first spread during summer break gave me the opportunity to determine what I wanted the newspaper to become, and that was one with photo stories, font contrast, and simplicity.

I designed this page to be as useful as possible to the readers at my school. It includes icons I created, a graph, and student quotes. These aspects all work together to display a reader friendly spread.

As a journalist, it is greatly rewarding to publish something authentic enough to draw positive attention from the community. "Unmasking" hall monitors and demonstrating the contrast of their school and family life humanized those that walk the halls at my school. People came up to me shocked to see the personal lives of those they didn't know. It is gratifying to have this kind of response as a journalist.

Alternative Design

After realizing that my publication needed to focus on alternative designs for the 2017-2018 school year, I learned from Jim Striesel at the MIPA Summer Workshop, who taught me alternative ideas for design. Creating these quizzes changed how students interacted with my publication and gave me an innovative design approach.
Social Media

In my time as a designer, I quickly learned that design is more than what is printed on paper. It is also what a broadened audience shares on social media. Creating Twitter headers and score summaries for our sporting events allowed me to collaborate with the vision of those managing our social media.
In order to make our publication more reader friendly, I opened Adobe Illustrator for the first time to create icons. This was a daunting experience making illustrations from scratch. Through countless YouTube tutorials and determination, I went outside of my comfort zone and added another new element to our newspaper with this side graphic.
